Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill
In the course of the Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill’s journey through the Assembly,  members of Sinn Fein proposed an amendment to the Bill that would place a duty on DHSSPS to undertake a consultation on the introduction of a sugary drinks levy within one year of the Bill’s enactment – this was accepted by the house at consideration stage.
At the Bill’s Further Consideration stage, on 7 March, the Health Minister proposed further amendments to this clause, which were accepted by the Assembly, that now instead require the Department to commission a study in relation to the potential impact of such a sugar-sweetened drinks levy within two years of enactment.
The transcript of the debate at further consideration stage can be accessed via the Assembly website.
