All-island Obesity Action Forum workshop: Nudge, nudge
Making the healthier choice the easier choice.

This All-island Obesity Forum workshop focused on ‘‘nudging’’ as a behaviour change concept to encourage positive behaviours in relation to health and wellbeing and to promote a healthy weight.

Prof Liam Delaney provided examples of how the approach has been used by governments and described the need to strike a balance between ethics, politics, and public acceptability when it comes to the use of the approach in public policy.
The approach, made famous in the 2008 book ‘Nudge’ by Thaler and Sunstein, allows freedom of choice (libertararianism) but seeks to shape outcomes to help people make decisions (paternalism).

Prof Theresa Marteau shared the findings a Cochrane review of studies relating to portion, package or tableware size. This review found that reducing the size, availability and appeal of larger-sized portions, packages and tableware has potential to reduce reduce calorie intake by 12% to 16%.

Dr Fiona Geaney presented an overview of Food Choice at Work, an initiative that practically uses the nudge theory to shape the food environment in the workplace.
Dr Damien Bennett shared another practical application where employees in Public Health Agency’s office in Belfast were nudged to ‘Take the Stairs’. The use of signage, floor markings and an overhaul of the stairwell has led to an increase in the number of people using the stairs and an in physical activity. See toolkit.
