Stigma in obesity - a public health priority?


The latest All-island obesity action forum conference was held in the NICVA centre in Belfast on the 20th of June. 

Dr Eric Robinson from the University of Liverpool discussed the consequences of weight based stigma. Dr Aoife Brinkley from Temple Street Children’s University Hospital described the experiences of obesity stigma in children. Mr Sven Schubert a patient representative for the Association of the Study of Obesity on the island of Ireland gave his personal account of experiencing weight stigma throughout his life.

Dr Judy Swift from the University of Nottingham looked at communicating obesity in a non-stigmatizing manner. The conference was closed by Dr Caroline Heary from the National University of Ireland, Galway who discussed key learnings from stigma in mental health.

In June safefood launched MediaWise, a free educational resource to help teach primary school children about the media and advertising. The resource is an 8-week programme suitable for primary school children of all ages.

Primary schools can access a free copy of MediaWise online from September 2017 by visiting the MediaWise
website.
