Total lifetime costs of childhood overweight and obesity on the island of Ireland

The lifetime cost of childhood overweight and obesity on the island of Ireland, in a cohort of children with excess weight in 2015, is €7.2 billion. A 5% reduction in body mass index (BMI) in children would result in a lifetime saving of €1.1 billion.

All-island Obesity Action Forum workshop - Schools can, Schools do

The latest All-island Obesity Action Forum Workshop took place on the 14th of November 2017. The workshop focused on the success of schools in promoting healthy eating and physical activity.

The workshop hosted a range of national and international speakers including Jo Jewell from the World Health Organization, Janet McAlister from the Food in Schools Forum Northern Ireland (NI), Catherine Woods from the University of Limerick, Dr Mimi Tatlow-Golden from the Open University and Ms Anne Walsh from the Department of Health Promotion and Improvement within the Health Service Executive (HSE).

The workshop was chaired by Professor Donal O’Shea, Clinical Lead for Obesity in the HSE and Dr Grace O’Malley, Senior Physiotherapist at Temple Street.
